Scripture Engagement in our Lives and Ministries

The IFES Bible study consultation took place in Singapore from February 9-15, 2011. It was attended by 30 people from 24 countries. The delegates were made up of students, staff, and volunteers aged 35 and younger; the team of IFES staff came from five different regions.

The stated goals of this consultation were:
  • To help build relevant Scripture engagement and trust in the power of God’s Word into the culture of our IFES movements on all levels;
  • To develop new approaches that will help this student generation to become interested in and attracted by Scripture, to learn to go deep into God’s Word, and to become firmly rooted in Christ.

Central Issues around Scripture Engagement:
  • Conviction and Motivation.
  • Engaging All of Scripture.
  • Engaging with the World’s Needs and Issues.
  • Evangelistic Bible Study.
  • Oral Learning/Creative Approaches.
  • Training.
  • IT/New Media.
  • Giving Space at the grassroots level for new things to be developed and tried out (particularly need student initiative).

You can e-mail Sabine for full report and detailed conclusions by region.

Soon there will be a Scripture engagement newsletter in IFES. This newsletter will give some food for thought to help us reflect on how we are engaging Scripture and will share examples of how students around the world are engaging with God’s word so that we can learn more from one another. It will be available in English, French, and Spanish and will be sent out 2-4 times per year. You can sign up for it here: http://eepurl.com/fPI2v.
